The homeowners sold their house but the City of Calgary said they were in noncompliance because their fence was too close to the utility boxes. If you have utility boxes, the utility companies and City require any fencing to be at least 2-metres from the property line. The original fence was only about 5 to 10cm from the utility box and therefore had to moved before the sale is complete. The homeowners asked me to reuse as many fence boards as possible.

We recently repaired a deck in the Ramsay neighbourhood of Calgary. It was a well-built deck and approximately 13-years old. The steps and a number of deck boards felt soft to walk on. After removing the suspect areas, we found significant rot in the support beams that led to the steps. While the steps were okay, they were no longer actually attached to the deck.

Over the course of the summer, I’ve become a ‘handyman’ for one of our clients. They are preparing their home for potential sale and needed to do some repairs and maintenance.

The homeowner loves the look of the aged wood on her 18-year-old ground level deck. It was originally well-built - with pressure treated structure and washed gravel to help keep the wood more dry. Rotted deck boards were replaced for safety while maintaining the look and feel.

With new railings, four new 2x10s and new skirting, this deck will continue to bring joy.

As a social worker and deck builder, I view decks as opportunities for building community connections.
